Military tensions escalate in Libya Haftar forces deployed to Sirte
According to a report by the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al-mayadeen, Mahmoud Hamza, commander of Libya’s Military Intelligence Service, announced on Wednesday that military operations in Tripoli, the country’s capital, are imminent. All preparations are underway, and the security situation is under control.
Following clashes in Tripoli after the assassination of Abdulghani Al-Kikli,head of Libya’s Military Intelligence Service,the service’s media office stated in a release that military operations in Tripoli will begin soon and that the situation remains controlled.
The statement was issued amid escalating security tensions in several neighborhoods of tripoli, against a backdrop of accusations exchanged between armed groups and growing local and international calls for an immediate ceasefire to protect civilians.
A high-ranking Libyan military source reported today that the main operations room of Libya’s armed Forces—under Khalifa Haftar’s command—has issued urgent orders for military convoys to move from Benghazi towards sirte amid anticipated developments in the country’s military situation.
The source, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated: “Armed convoys under Khalifa Haftar’s command are now en route from benghazi to Sirte.”
The source emphasized—without providing further details on mission objectives—that immediate orders were issued for army forces to proceed towards Sirte at this time.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) also expressed deep concern over continued violence in densely populated neighborhoods of Tripoli for a second consecutive night endangering civilians’ lives.
A statement by UNSMIL read: “We demand an immediate and unconditional ceasefire across all residential areas. We are gravely concerned about ongoing clashes exacerbating security and humanitarian crises” while warning against consequences that could deepen instability nationwide.”
