BRICS adopts action plan to reduce natural disaster risks
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and BRICS TV, a meeting of BRICS ministers focused on reducing natural disaster risks was held in Brasília, Brazil’s capital. At the conclusion of the meeting,participants issued a joint statement and announced the adoption of a BRICS work plan for 2025–2028.The declaration was published on the official website of Brazil’s BRICS presidency.
The final document of the meeting aims to strengthen climate resilience and enhance international cooperation to address disasters caused by climate change.
Jader Filho, Brazil’s Minister of Cities, stated: “Brazil’s active participation in BRICS reflects our commitment to implementing public policies that bolster resilient infrastructure and advance integrated measures against natural disasters.”
The joint statement outlines recommendations for mitigating climate-related disaster risks and improving response mechanisms. It emphasizes member states’ adherence to a shared agenda on disaster prevention, climate adaptation, and promoting lasting development grounded in social justice.
The four key principles highlighted in the declaration are:
- – Integrating development and social justice policies with disaster risk reduction strategies
- – Strengthening preventive approaches under the Sendai framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015–2030)
- – Developing strategies with climate considerations
- – Promoting initiatives to enhance resilience
The BRICS work plan for 2025–2028 focuses on three pillars: prevention,damage reduction,and adaptation to climate change. Four priority areas were identified:
- – Addressing inequality
- – Establishing effective early warning systems and improving disaster forecasting/prevention capabilities
- – Developing resilient infrastructure
- – Leveraging local communities’ knowledge/experience in disaster risk management
