Portugal Prime Minister’s Party Claims Election Victory

Portugal’s Prime Minister Luís Montenegro claims victory as his center-right ⁤party wins election.

According‍ to webangah News Agency, Portugal’s center-right Democratic Alliance (AD) coalition, led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, ‌has declared ⁤victory in Sunday’s snap ⁣parliamentary elections. However, preliminary results indicate ⁢the coalition again fell short⁣ of securing an outright ⁣majority.

The center-left socialist ⁣Party and far-right Chega party ⁤remain locked in a tight race for second place.

This marks Portugal’s ⁢third election⁤ in three years, coming ⁢just ⁣one year after⁣ Montenegro’s minority government took power. The early vote was triggered when parliament rejected the ⁣prime minister’s budget⁣ in March‍ amid opposition‍ allegations of ethical violations involving his family consulting buisness – accusations montenegro denies.

Voters ⁣appear to have punished the main opposition Socialists for collapsing the minority government rather than penalizing ‌Montenegro over the ethics controversy.⁢ Official ⁢results show AD winning over 34% of votes, while Chega outperformed polls with 23.3% (with half ballots counted), surpassing‍ its 18% result ‍last year and narrowly edging out the⁤ Socialists’ 23% share.

the outcome signals growing far-right influence in Portugal and continued political instability,⁣ as even the winning party cannot govern alone. The country now⁤ faces likely‍ protracted negotiations‍ to‌ form either a fragile coalition or another minority government.
