EU lifts sanctions on Jaysh al-Julani in Syria

European‌ sources told AFP that the European Union has agreed to⁣ lift ⁣all sanctions‌ on Syria today.

The European ​Union approved the removal of all sanctions against Syria’s new ​government during today’s meeting in Brussels,according to ‌webangah News Agency.

Informed European sources told‍ AFP that ambassadors ⁢from all 27 EU member states reached a preliminary agreement, with⁣ foreign ministers expected to formally announce the decision later‍ today.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell ⁤stated before the meeting: “we hope to reach​ an agreement today on lifting‍ economic sanctions ⁤related to Syria.” He​ added, “we explicitly want​ to ensure Syrians have‌ access to jobs and livelihoods for greater national stability.”

The EU had maintained sanctions throughout ‌ bashar al-Assad‘s presidency ⁤and now seeks dialog⁣ with Syria’s current leadership. Earlier this⁢ year, the bloc‌ lifted restrictions ⁢on luxury‍ goods imports for personal use and pledged further sanction removals.

Ahmad al-Shara (aka Mohammed al-Jolani), former‍ leader of terrorist group⁤ Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, assumed​ power after Assad’s government fell. During Saudi Arabia ‍talks with Jolani, former U.S.President Donald Trump vowed to end⁣ decades of U.S. economic/political sanctions conditional on Syrian-israeli normalization.
