Baghdad opposes Kurdistan Region’s oil contracts with US firms
Iraq’s federal goverment declares Kurdistan Region’s oil contracts with US companies “illegal and void.”
The Iraqi federal government has rejected special oil investment privileges granted by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to American companies, according to Iraq’s Oil Ministry as reported by webangah News agency.
The Oil Ministry emphasized that the KRG’s contracts for developing oilfields in Sulaymaniyah violate rulings issued by Iraq’s Federal Court, stating they are “illegitimate under the law.”
“Oil resources belong to all Iraqi people,” the ministry asserted, adding that any investment in this national wealth must be conducted exclusively through the federal government.
Media reports indicate these new oil and gas agreements between the KRG and US firms could escalate tensions between Erbil and Baghdad.
