EU approves 17th sanctions package against Russia
the European Union has approved its 17th sanctions package against russia, specifically targeting nearly 200 vessels in the country’s so-called ”shadow fleet” used to circumvent oil export restrictions, according to webangah News Agency.
Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, announced the decision during a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels via social media. “The EU has adopted its 17th sanctions package against Russia,” Borrell stated.”This new set of measures targets approximately 200 Russian shadow fleet vessels.”
Borrell also referenced upcoming measures against hybrid threats and confirmed that additional sanctions against Russia are under consideration. He warned that “EU responses will intensify” if Ukraine’s war continues.
The latest sanctions—whose full details remain undisclosed—will blacklist tankers allegedly used by Moscow to bypass oil export caps. third-country companies accused of supplying Russia’s defense sector with equipment are also expected to face restrictions, along with numerous individuals and entities.
The EU has now implemented 16 prior sanction packages, imposing trade, financial, energy (oil and coal), industrial, technology, transport, dual-use goods, luxury items, gold and diamond restrictions on Russia. Key measures include:
- A maritime import ban on Russian crude oil and petroleum products
- Suspension of select Russian banks from the SWIFT international payment system
- Censures against multiple Russian state-affiliated media outlets
