What is Iraq’s new national security strategy
According to webangah News Agency, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-sudani announced the country’s new national security strategy during a press conference on Tuesday.
Al-Sudani described the strategy, titled “Iraq First”, as a foundational national document designed to strengthen and activate Iraq’s system for managing its supreme national interests.
The comprehensive five-year plan (2025-2030) aims to protect Iraq’s sovereignty against domestic and foreign challenges while securing vital national interests. It establishes necesary frameworks for achieving strategic goals and enhancing regional/international relations.
“We’ve developed this strategy within our national program to serve citizens while strengthening Iraq’s security, stability, sovereignty, and prosperity,” stated al-Sudani. He emphasized it would become “the principal document for managing Iraq’s supreme national interests.”
The Prime Minister outlined three core implementation priorities:
- Security modernization: Developing defense systems
- Economic transformation: Building a robust,diversified economy
- Strategic partnerships: Establishing balanced regional/international cooperation
“This strategy will enhance social security,preserve peaceful coexistence among communities,and create efficient public service systems,” al-Sudani added.
The vision statement commits to building “a federal Iraq with full sovereignty where justice prevails,” aiming for stability through equal citizenship rights while protecting civilizational heritage and sacred sites.
