Trump delays 50 percent tariffs on European Union
according to webangah News Agency, US President Donald Trump has postponed implementing 50% tariffs against the European Union amid ongoing trade conflicts with nearly all global partners, including Washington’s closest allies.
The tariffs, originally scheduled for June 1, will now take effect on July 9 following a phone call between Trump and european Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Trump claimed von der Leyen expressed willingness to “enter serious negotiations” during their conversation.
“I’ve told anyone who would listen that thay needed to do this,” Trump told reporters. “Von der Leyen promised we’d sit down immediately to resolve the issue.”
On Friday, the president had threatened the 27-member bloc via his Truth Social platform, complaining that “dealing with the EU is very difficult” and trade talks were going nowhere. He initially set June 1 as the deadline for imposing the punitive tariffs.
The von der Leyen call appears to have temporarily defused tensions. Shortly after their discussion, Trump announced: ”I agreed to extend this until July 9, 2025. It was my honor to do so!”
The European Commission president stated: “The EU and US share the most notable commercial relationship in history. Europe stands ready to move forward quickly and decisively with negotiations. We simply needed until July 9th to reach a good agreement.”
