South Korea’s leading presidential candidate seeks meeting with Kim Jong Un
According to webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Anadolu, Lee Jae-myung, the frontrunner in South korea’s presidential race, said he intends to pursue a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un if he wins the June 3 election.
However, the Democratic Party candidate—who represents the opposition to the ruling party—acknowledged that organizing such an event under current conditions would be “extremely difficult.”
“this is obviously something that must be done,” Myung said, “but I’m not sure whether it’s feasible. Given the present circumstances,it would be very challenging.”
South Korea is nearing an early presidential election and has entered its final week of campaigning. Former President Yoon Suk-yeol was impeached and removed by a Constitutional Court ruling after his failed December 3, 2024, attempt to declare martial law.
Myung, who narrowly lost the 2022 presidential race to Yoon Suk-yeol, now leads nearly all polls for the upcoming election. His main rival is Kim Moon-soo from the ruling party.
Inter-Korean relations deteriorated during Yoon’s presidency, wich strengthened Seoul’s defense and security ties with Japan and the U.S. Under a joint defense agreement with Seoul, Washington stations over 28,500 troops in southern areas of the demilitarized zone bordering North Korea.
