Finland summons Russian ambassador over alleged airspace violation
According to webangah News Agency, Finland’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s ambassador following Helsinki’s claims that Russian fighter jets illegally entered Finnish airspace.
Finnish broadcaster YLE reported that Pavel kuznetsov, Russia’s ambassador to Finland, was called in for official explanations at the Foreign Ministry.
Helsinki officials allege two Russian warplanes violated Finnish airspace near the city of Porvoo in the Gulf of Finland. This marks the first such incident since February this year.
Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen stated: “We take this suspected airspace violation seriously and are investigating the matter.”
Häkkänen added that Russia’s military objectives in the Baltic region have shifted toward protecting its so-called “shadow fleet” (alleged oil tankers used by Moscow to circumvent sanctions).
The minister further noted: “No immediate threat against Finland is observed, but Russia continues enhancing its military capabilities and remains an aggressive, dangerous neighbor for all of Europe.”
Finland shares a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia. Helsinki joined NATO in 2023 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
