Palestinian flag raised at World Health Organization by majority vote
The Palestinian delegation secured the right to raise its flag at the world Health Association (WHO) after a Monday vote—a symbolic move signaling growing international recognition of Palestine. webangah News Agency (Follow) reported this development, citing reuters.
During the annual assembly in Geneva, a proposal to hoist the Palestinian flag passed with 95 votes in favor. The motion was backed by countries including China, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. Opposing votes came from Hungary, Czech Republic, Germany, and Israel, while 27 nations abstained.
The decision coincides with heightened speculation about France potentially recognizing Palestinian statehood. It follows Palestine’s recent diplomatic achievements, including its upgraded UN General Assembly observer status last year.
Ibrahim Khraishi, Palestine’s UN ambassador in Geneva, called the move “symbolic” but notable: “This step reaffirms our place within the international community and our commitment to addressing global health needs.” He expressed hope for Palestine’s full WHO membership and broader UN integration soon.
Lebanon’s representative Rana El Khoury explicitly referenced Israel’s war in Gaza, stating the vote offered “even fleeting hope” to Palestinians enduring immense suffering.
