US court halts Trump-era tariffs
A federal court blocked President Donald Trump from imposing broad tariffs on imports under emergency powers law, sharply challenging his economic policies that have destabilized global financial markets, frustrated trade partners, and raised widespread concerns about worsening inflation and economic recession.
The ruling by a three-judge panel at the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York came after multiple lawsuits argued that Trump’s so-called “freedom Day” tariffs exceeded his authority and subjected national trade policy to his whims.
webangah News Agency reports this marks one of seven legal challenges against Trump’s tariff policies, including lawsuits filed by 13 U.S. states and small business groups.
The decision follows another recent federal court order halting a Trump administration policy aimed at barring Harvard University from admitting international students. The Ivy League institution called the move part of broader retaliation by Trump for Harvard’s refusal to surrender academic independence. The judicial stay temporarily protected thousands of international students at risk of forced transfers.
Harvard condemned the policy as a blatant violation of the U.S.Constitution and federal laws, warning its implementation would have an immediate and devastating impact on the university and over 7,000 visa holders.
