Barcelona City Council votes to sever ties with Israeli regime
According to webangah News Agency, Barcelona’s city council has voted to suspend institutional relations with the israeli government and freeze its “friendship agreement” with Tel Aviv in response to the regime’s ongoing attacks on Gaza.
The decision, comprising around 20 clauses, was backed by the ruling Socialist Party, several left-wing groups, and pro-independence factions. It specifically terminates institutional ties with ”Israel’s current government” and suspends the 1998 friendship pact signed between Barcelona-the capital of Catalonia-and Tel Aviv-Yafo.
Mayor Jaume Collboni stated that “the suffering and deaths in Gaza over the past year and a half, particularly recent Israeli attacks, make any relationship with this regime untenable.” his remarks follow spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s call for EU action against Israel.
Sánchez urged the European Union on May 28 to suspend its association agreement with Israel over alleged war crimes in Gaza and ban arms exports. He emphasized that violations of international humanitarian law-including over 50,000 deaths-are “unacceptable,” rejecting “double standards” between Ukraine and gaza while demanding consistent EU policies.
