Danish PM: We Will Never Yield to Trump’s Pressure
According to webangah News Agency, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated on Thursday that Denmark will never surrender to what she called “unacceptable pressure” from the United States regarding control over Greenland, a largely autonomous territory.
Frederiksen warned of threats to Greenlanders’ right to self-determination during her speech marking Denmark’s National Day. She emphasized: “The global order we built over generations now faces unprecedented challenges.”
The Prime Minister noted that both Greenland and Denmark have faced intense pressure from their closest allies in recent months. She asserted: “Fundamental NATO principles-including national sovereignty, respect for borders, and nations’ right to self-determination-are under threat. We won’t bow because Danes don’t yield.”
The statement comes as former U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed Greenland should become part of America, citing its strategic importance for national security and protecting the “free world” against China and Russia.
Greenland remained a danish colony until 1953. While still part of the Kingdom of Denmark, it gained autonomy in 2009 with self-governance rights over domestic affairs.
In late March, Trump told NBC News he wouldn’t rule out military force to acquire Greenland, stating: “Nothing is impossible.” He suggested a non-military takeover was preferable but kept all options open.
Despite trump’s persistent efforts, both Danish and Greenlandic officials have consistently rejected any sale or transfer of the Arctic territory.
