The Madeleine (Madleen ship), a vessel transporting humanitarian aid and several pro-Palestine activists, was intercepted by the Israeli military earlier today. All passengers were reportedly detained.
Reema Hassan, a European Parliament member aboard the ship, confirmed an Israeli drone flew over the Madeleine and discharged an unidentified white liquid onto its deck.
Witnesses stated Israeli forces had seized control of the vessel.Al Jazeera reported communications with those onboard were severed.
Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on Palestinian rights, emphasized the ship posed no security threat to Israel. She asserted Tel Aviv had no jurisdiction to intercept it in international waters.
A military radio broadcast cited Israeli naval commandos taking control of the Madeleine. The vessel is being diverted to Ashdod port for interrogation of detainees at an Israeli naval base.
Global Condemnation
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of France’s left-wing party, denounced the seizure outside Israel’s territorial waters as “a blatant violation of international law.” He announced protests in Paris’ Place de la République against Israel’s detention of 12 international activists.
Jeremy Corbyn, former UK Labor leader and MP, demanded Britain halt military-economic ties with Israel: “Its actions against Freedom flotilla vessels and Gaza policies constitute grave breaches of international law.” He urged global pressure to end Gaza’s blockade.
