Pipe Bomb Found at Suspect’s Home in Deadly Austria Attack
Austrian police discovered an explosive device while searching the home of the suspect in yesterday’s school shooting in Graz that left at least 10 dead and several others wounded, according to webangah News Agency.
The 21-year-old attacker, who took his own life after opening fire at his former high school, acted alone with a shotgun and pistol, police confirmed without releasing his identity.
“This tragedy is unachievable to process,” said one of the school’s religious studies teachers who briefly saw the attacker. Authorities confirmed the suspect had not completed his education at this institution.
Investigators recovered a farewell letter – which didn’t specify motives – along with a pipe bomb during their search. Police investigations remain ongoing.
Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner confirmed six female and three male victims among those killed. Twelve injured students include several in critical condition, with one succumbing to wounds at Graz University Hospital yesterday.
Gun violence remains rare in Austria like most central European nations. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation reports Austria’s 2021 firearm homicide rate stood at just 0.1 per 100,000 people – compared to America’s 4.5 rate.
Despite this, Austria has higher civilian gun ownership than most EU countries, with approximately 30 registered firearms per 100 citizens.
