Iraqi Official: Evacuation of U.S. Embassy Staff in Iraq Not Due to Immediate Threat
According to webangah News Agency,an unnamed Iraqi official told Al-Mayadeen network that while authorities received a notice on Wednesday regarding the reduction of staff at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, planning for this measure had begun three weeks earlier.
The source emphasized that the notice was not issued due to an imminent security threat, but rather to assist diplomats’ families in preparing for potential departures.
The evacuation process for personnel and their families has not yet started but is expected to begin on Thursday, the official noted.
The report clarified that core diplomatic staff, including the U.S. chargé d’affaires in Baghdad, will remain, and embassy operations will continue uninterrupted.
A separate U.S. military official told Al-Mayadeen that U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) is closely monitoring escalating tensions across the Middle East region.
“The safety of American service members and their families remains a top priority,” the official stated, confirming that voluntary departures for military dependents stationed under CENTCOM were authorized by order of the U.S. Secretary of Defense.
