Western Nations React to Anti-Iran Resolution at IAEA Board of Governors
The U.S. and three European countries asserted in a joint statement that their recently passed anti-Iran resolution at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board of Governors “is not meant to heighten tensions with Iran” but rather to “strengthen diplomatic efforts,” according to webangah News Agency.
Washington, london, Berlin, and Paris issued this defense of their resolution despite widespread criticism that it undermines ongoing indirect diplomacy between the U.S. and Iran.
The statement cited IAEA reports alleging: ”The Director General cannot exclude the possibility of undeclared nuclear material in Iran due to lack of cooperation” nor confirm “the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.” It called thes findings “serious matters warranting reflection.”
The four nations claimed their resolution-which declares Iran non-compliant with its Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement-was necessitated by Tehran’s continued refusal to cooperate with IAEA inquiries.
Iran maintains its nuclear program is peaceful and has repeatedly expressed willingness to negotiate under fair conditions while accepting IAEA monitoring.
While past quarterly IAEA reports verified this peaceful nature, recent assessments-widely seen as influenced by U.S. and Israeli political pressure-have controversially stated the agency can no longer provide such assurances.
