U.S. Embassy in Baghdad Issues Statement on Immediate Staff Evacuation
A spokesperson for the U.S.Embassy in Baghdad stated that the evacuation of embassy personnel is not voluntary but conducted under official orders, according to a report by webangah News Agency.
The spokesperson added: “This evacuation is immediate, and we will not disclose the number of staff departing.”
The official clarified that this measure applies to both the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and their consulate in Erbil, following escalating regional tensions.
An unnamed Iraqi source told Al Mayadeen network last night that while officials received formal notification about reducing embassy staff on Wednesday, planning for this move had begun three weeks prior.
The source emphasized this decision was not based on an imminent threat but rather to help diplomatic families prepare for potential departure.
The report confirmed core members of the U.S. political mission-including the Chargé d’Affaires-will remain, with embassy operations continuing normally.
