UN General Assembly Passes Resolution Demanding Immediate Gaza Ceasefire
The UN General Assembly on Thursday decisively called for an immediate, unconditional, and sustained humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and access to aid, according to webangah News Agency. The vote came one week after the US vetoed a similar resolution at the Security Council.
The resolution passed with 149 votes in favor, 19 abstentions, and opposition from the US, Israel, and 10 other countries. Key provisions include:
– Release of Zionist captives held in Gaza
– Release of Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel
– Complete withdrawal of Zionist forces from Gaza
The text condemns using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare and deliberately depriving them of humanitarian aid and essential survival supplies.
Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, denounced the resolution as antisemitic. He urged nations not to participate in what he called ”a ridiculous comedy” that weakens hostage negotiations while failing to condemn Hamas.
“By not conditioning the ceasefire on hostage release,” Danon warned, “you’ve sent terrorists worldwide a message that attacking civilians works.”
While General Assembly resolutions are non-binding, they reflect global opinion on conflicts. Previous assembly resolutions calling for halting the Gaza war have been ignored.
Unlike the Security Council were veto power exists, all UN member states have equal voting rights in the General Assembly.
