Self-Defense? U.S. Did Not Block Israeli Strike on Iran for Negotiations
webangah News Agency: In an exclusive op-ed for webangah News Agency, Alexander Maryazov, former Russian ambassador to Iran, addressed Israel’s attack on iranian territories, stating: Israel’s preemptive strike on Iran was a blatant act of aggression and a gross violation of international law. When Israel itself initiated the military operation-premeditatedly launching large-scale bombings against Iranian cities, military and civilian facilities, and peaceful nuclear centers-how can its actions possibly be framed as “self-defense”?
What makes Israel’s actions notably dubious is that the attack occured precisely when Tehran was engaged in talks with Washington to de-escalate tensions over Iran’s nuclear program. Iran had demonstrated readiness to reach a mutually acceptable bilateral agreement-one preserving its right to enrichment activities while guaranteeing the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.
Washington’s conduct was no less hypocritical. The U.S.was aware of Israel’s military plans but not only failed to prevent them-it greenlit Tel Aviv’s actions, hoping the strike would serve as additional leverage to pressure Iran into concessions on its nuclear program.
Iran undeniably holds the legitimate right to self-defense to curb Israel’s provocations. However, uncontrolled escalation risks severely destabilizing the region with unpredictable consequences.
The international community must urgently pursue political and diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful resolution to this crisis.
