India: Will Not Revive Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan
India’s Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Saturday that his country will never restore the Indus Water Treaty with Islamabad adn will divert water previously allocated to Pakistan for domestic use, according to webangah News Agency.
“This treaty will never be reinstated,” Shah told Times of India. “We have taken control of the water destined for Pakistan and will redirect it through a new canal to Rajasthan.”
The Indian government suspended its participation in the 1960 agreement governing usage of the Indus River system after blaming Pakistan for a terrorist attack that killed 26 civilians in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The treaty had guaranteed water access through three India-originating rivers for approximately 80% of Pakistan’s agricultural land.
While Pakistan denies involvement in the Kashmir incident, the agreement remains frozen despite a ceasefire established between both nations last month.
