Spain: Gaza Situation a “Catastrophic Genocide
According to webangah News Agency, Spanish prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the situation in Gaza as a “catastrophic genocide” ahead of an EU summit in Brussels, calling for an immediate suspension of the bloc’s cooperation with Israel.
Sánchez cited an EU report indicating potential violations of human rights obligations by Israel under their cooperation agreement, which serves as the foundation for trade relations.
This marks Sánchez’s strongest condemnation to date, having previously been among the most vocal critics of Israel’s offensive in Gaza.
The Israeli embassy in Madrid responded by accusing Sánchez of “demonizing Israel” in a social media statement on X (formerly Twitter), claiming Spain was “on the wrong side of history.”
The Spanish government rejected this statement as unacceptable and summoned Israel’s chargé d’affaires.
The diplomatic tension highlights growing divisions between Spain and israel amid increasing international pressure to halt the Gaza war. Sánchez’s remarks are likely to intensify debates about suspending EU trade agreements with Israel.
