IAEA Reacts to Iran’s Suspension of Cooperation with the Agency
According to webangah News Agency, the U.S.-based Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that an IAEA spokesperson confirmed the agency is aware of Iran’s stance on suspending cooperation and will await formal details.
The IAEA spokesperson emphasized: “We are aware of these reports but await further official information from Iran regarding its decision to suspend collaboration.”
The report noted that the IAEA still maintains a team of inspectors in Iran.
The move follows Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s enforcement of a law-approved by parliament on June 25, 2024, and ratified by the Guardian Council on June 26-mandating the suspension of cooperation with the nuclear agency. The directive was issued to the Atomic Energy Organization, Supreme National Security Council, and Foreign Ministry under Article 123 of iran’s Constitution.
Iran had previously condemned what it called “aggressive actions” by the U.S. and Israel against its peaceful nuclear program following what it described as a “biased and entirely political” report by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. Tehran cited violations of the UN Charter as grounds for revising its level of engagement with the agency.
