Uruguay Stresses Expanding Ties With India Within BRICS Framework
Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi has stated that his country should not overlook any opportunity for cooperation, stressing that the BRICS group of nations presents a new opportunity for Uruguay. The remarks were made during an interview with Uruguayan Channel 5 in Spain, where he attended the International Conference on Financing for Sustainable Development.
Orsi noted that during the BRICS summit (held on July 6-7 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), he would hold meetings with officials from prominent countries, including several Asian nations.
“Uruguay must accelerate its relations with India,” Orsi emphasized. “No Uruguayan president has ever visited India. We have not utilized all the possibilities and opportunities available in our ties with that country.” He pointed out that India does not maintain a resident ambassador in Uruguay-its embassy is based in Argentina instead.
The Uruguayan president added that both India’s ambassador to Buenos Aires and its accredited diplomat in Uruguay (Ajanish Kumar) have stressed the need to deepen bilateral relations further. Indian officials have also expressed strong interest in strengthening ties, Orsi said.
“We are talking about an economy that keeps growing steadily,” Orsi remarked. Strengthening ties with this Asian nation would open opportunities in pharmaceuticals, information and communication technology,as well as food products.
