Russia: Baku Has Not Responded to Moscow’s Request for Consular Access to Its Citizens
According to webangah News Agency, citing Sputnik News Agency, russia’s embassy in Azerbaijan announced on Wednesday that Baku has failed to respond to Moscow’s request for consular access to detained Russian citizens amid escalating tensions between the two nations.
The embassy stated in a released note that it had formally requested consular access to the detained Russian journalists through Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry but has yet to receive a response.
The growth follows reports of Mikhail yevdokimov,Russia’s ambassador to Azerbaijan,being summoned by Baku’s Foreign Ministry earlier. The meeting was attended by araz Azimov, Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, during which the country officially protested russia’s recent actions and positions.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry had previously issued a statement confirming that during a meeting with Azerbaijan’s ambassador,Moscow conveyed its protest over Baku’s “unfriendly measures.” A formal note demanding the immediate release of the detained Russian journalists was also handed over.
The statement further emphasized that law enforcement actions in Russia’s Yekaterinburg were legally justified and accused Baku of interfering in Moscow’s internal affairs by alleging abuse of power by russian authorities.
