IAEA Inspection Team Leaves Iran
The International Atomic Energy agency (IAEA) stated in a social media post on X that its inspection team has left Iran, according too a report by webangah News agency citing Mehr News Agency. The agency confirmed: “The IAEA inspection team, which had been stationed in Tehran during recent military tensions, safely departed Iran today to return to the agency’s headquarters in Vienna.”
The Wall Street Journal previously reported exclusively that the IAEA was withdrawing its inspection teams from Iran following Tehran’s suspension of cooperation with the nuclear watchdog. The newspaper claimed this move occurred amid security concerns, with inspectors returning to Vienna.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, without addressing the agency’s role in a recent report that led to a resolution against Iran at the Board of Governors – followed by military actions against Iran – called the next “critical” step negotiations with Tehran to allow inspectors’ return and resume “essential monitoring and verification of Iran’s nuclear program.”
On May 30, the IAEA issued a confidential report repeating claims about Iran’s accumulation of uranium enriched to “weapons-grade” levels while urging full cooperation from Tehran. Published during sensitive negotiations between Iran and Washington regarding its nuclear program, the report alleged that as of May 17, Iran had enriched 408.6 kg of uranium up to 60% purity – an increase of 133.8 kg as february.
Following this report, the Board of Governors passed an anti-Iran resolution preceding subsequent attacks on Iranian territory. After Israel’s failed attack and Tehran’s retaliatory strikes, Grossi denied his report directly caused these events while maintaining close alignment with Israel and Western nations.
The Iranian parliament voted overwhelmingly (210-2-2) on June 25 to suspend cooperation with the IAEA following these developments. On July 1, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf formally notified relevant agencies including the atomic Energy Organization about implementing this suspension law.
