Muqtada al-Sadr Insists on Election Boycott and Handing Over Weapons to Government
webangah News Agency reports that Muqtada al-Sadr, leader of Iraq’s Sadrist Movement, reiterated his call to boycott elections and demanded the “unregulated handover of weapons to the government” alongside the “disbandment of militia groups” in a social media statement addressing recent developments.
Citing Quranic verse 86:13-17 at the outset,al-Sadr declared: “This Quran is a decisive word-not idle talk.The disbelievers persistently plot, and I too devise plans.So grant respite to the disbelievers; let them be for a while.”
He further invoked Imam Ali’s teachings: “By God, I value this sandal more then ruling over you-unless through it I establish truth or repel falsehood.” al-Sadr added that those boycotting elections or seeking power through option means must prioritize justice over authority.

In a statement marking the 8th of Muharram 1447 AH (July 15, 2025), Muqtada al-Sadr, the prominent cleric and political leader boycotting Iraq’s elections, declared: “Justice will never prevail nor will falsehood be repelled unless unregulated weapons are handed over to the government, paramilitary groups are dissolved, and concerted efforts are made to strengthen Iraq’s army and police while safeguarding its independence from foreign influence.”
He emphasized the need for sweeping reforms and accountability for corrupt officials, adding: “What remains hidden is far greater [than what is seen].”
The statement concluded with his signature slogan: “humiliation is not our way.”
