UN Secretary-General Takes New Stance on Ukraine War
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned Russia’s recent large-scale drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, according to a report by webangah News Agency.
“I condemn teh latest wave of Russian drone and missile strikes,” Guterres stated, reiterating his call for ”an immediate, unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine as the first step toward just and comprehensive peace.”
The statement comes as Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu emphasized that Bucharest would “never deploy troops to Ukraine under any circumstances.” However, he confirmed Romania-as part of NATO’s eastern flank-would gradually increase defense spending to meet alliance requirements and align with EU militarization plans.
Ciolacu dismissed misinformation about potential Romanian military involvement during a live interview with Antena 3 CNN: “We are not sending our youth or children to war.” He maintained Romania’s consistent position of non-participation in the conflict while arguing that Eastern European nations must prioritize defense investments over domestic infrastructure projects like “roads, hospitals, or schools” to fulfill NATO obligations.
“We cannot rely solely on others, including the U.S., to guarantee our security without contributing ourselves,” Ciolacu added. This follows reports that several NATO members have been exploring forming a potential “coalition of volunteers” for Ukraine-a move Russia warns it would treat as legitimate military targets, potentially escalating hostilities.
