Reports indicate that with a population of approximately 200 million Muslims-the third-largest Muslim community globally after Indonesia and Pakistan-India’s Muslims constitute roughly 14% of its total population. They are widely dispersed across this vast country.
Hindus constitute a majority in India, but states like Uttar Pradesh, bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and Kashmir have meaningful Muslim populations.
Muslims have played a vital role in India’s history, culture, politics, and economy. They remain one of the key elements of the country’s religious diversity. Within this community, approximately 10-15% are Shia Muslims. Though a minority numerically, they are culturally and religiously active-notably in cities like Lucknow, Hyderabad, Srinagar (Kashmir), and Mumbai-where they hold influential social gatherings.
