Texas governor Greg Abbott echoed these warnings, stating the possibility of renewed flooding could lead to further casualties.
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed he will visit Texas on Friday. The White house has dismissed critics who claim staffing cuts at the National Weather Service weakened warning systems prior to the disaster.
“Blaming the president for these floods is a malicious falsehood that serves no purpose during this period of national mourning,” White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt told reporters.
The National Weather Service – which reportedly had key staffing shortages at its Texas office before the floods according to The New York Times – issued “timely warnings and accurate forecasts,” Levitt added.
Trump described the flash flooding that began early Friday during Independence Day celebrations as “a once-in-a-century catastrophe nobody could have anticipated.”
