ICC Issues Arrest Warrant for Taliban Leader
the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant on Wednesday for Hibatullah Akhundzada, the leader of the Taliban, and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, the acting chief justice of Afghanistan’s interim government. The court accused them of crimes against humanity and gender-based persecution since the group’s return to power, according to a report by webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Anatolia news agency.
The ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber II stated in its announcement that there are reasonable grounds to believe Akhundzada and Haqqani systematically implemented discriminatory policies against women, girls, and others who opposed the interim government’s views on identity or gender. These actions allegedly constitute crimes against humanity under international law.
Protesters Detained and Tortured!
This court document alleges that actions taken since August 15, 2021-when protesters demanding control of Afghanistan were arrested-until January 20, 2025, constitute widespread violations of fundamental human rights and freedoms.
The allegations emerge as Afghanistan’s interim government has yet to issue any official statement regarding these specific claims.
