UN Official: Torture of Palestinian Prisoners Nears Genocide Threshold
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, has warned that Israel’s systematic and widespread torture of Palestinian prisoners and detainees is nearing the boundaries of genocidal crimes, according to a report by webangah News Agency.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter),Albanese revealed that Palestinian detainees-including both men and women-have endured sexual violence in Israeli detention centers. She stressed that the documented case of gang rape at Sde Teiman detention facility is “not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of severe human rights violations.”
She emphasized these acts constitute not only extreme cruelty but also meet one of the defined elements of genocide under international law: “inflicting serious bodily or mental harm on members of a group solely as they belong to that group.”
