Lavrov to Visit North Korea on Friday
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and the Associated Press, North Korea’s state news agency reported a three-day visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Pyongyang.
The agency stated that Lavrov will travel to North Korea at the invitation of his counterpart. However, no further details have been released, including weather the senior Russian diplomat will meet with North korean leader Kim Jong Un.
This trip follows a June visit by Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s top security official, to North Korea. During that visit, Shoigu met with Kim Jong Un and announced that thousands of construction workers and mine clearance experts would be sent to help rebuild the Kursk region in Russia.
In support of Russia’s war against Ukraine, North Korea has deployed thousands of troops to the front lines between Moscow and Kyiv. The country’s central news agency previously quoted Kim Jong Un stating that “the involvement of Pyongyang’s armed forces in this war was a sacred mission conducted to protect North Korea’s dignity.”
Last year in late June, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited North Korea. Following bilateral talks, leaders from both countries signed a “Comprehensive strategic Partnership Agreement.”
The Associated Press reported that lavrov’s visit signals a deepening strategic relationship and cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.
