According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Baghdad Al-Youm via Mehr News Agency, Khorshid Herki, leader of the Herki tribe involved in recent clashes in Erbil with Kurdish security forces, has handed himself over.
He expressed complete loyalty to Nechirvan Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Region, affirming that his fighters within the Peshmerga will remain under Barzani’s command until their last breath.
An informed source previously stated that Herki decided to surrender specifically to President Nechirvan Barzani as part of efforts to restore calm between his tribe and the Kuran tribe-the primary parties in recent conflicts-and would stay as a guest under barzani’s supervision for one week.
in this regard, the Social Affairs Committee within the Kurdistan Democratic Party is scheduled to meet this week. The session aims to mediate tribal and governmental efforts toward resolving internal disputes peacefully.
The clashes between security forces and Herki tribal elements led to curfews in Khavat district and closure of its roads connecting to Erbil. However, Shirwan Herki, official from Kurdistan People’s Union, recently reported a gradual return of peace. he confirmed roads linking Erbil with Duhok and Mosul have reopened. The death toll stands at four with twelve injured from these clashes.
The initial wave began on Tuesday after local authorities seized some land belonging to the Herki tribe in Khavat district-Erbil province. The tribal leader refused compliance with this decision and clashed with government agents on site.
Following this incident, security forces moved toward Khorshid Herki’s residence intending arrest but faced armed resistance from tribal members. This confrontation sparked armed conflict that later escalated across surrounding areas.
