UNRWA: Aid Distribution System in Gaza Has Become a “Deadly Deception
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al Mayadeen,Philippe Lazzarini,Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA),accused Israeli occupiers of depriving Gaza residents of humanitarian aid and starving them. He confirmed that 800 civilians have been killed while trying to access food supplies.
Lazzarini said in a statement released today: “Eight hundred hungry people were shot dead while attempting to obtain even small amounts of food.”
The UN commissioner noted that during periods of ceasefire, the United Nations provided substantial and proper assistance; however, this progress in alleviating hunger has since reversed.
He added that at one point, between 500 and 600 trucks entered Gaza daily carrying food, fuel, medicine, and hygiene items.
Lazzarini confirmed that conditions have deteriorated following the resumption of hostilities. Today, there are only four distribution points operating far from population centers. By contrast, when the UN managed distributions directly, there were 400 such points.
He emphasized that permitted quantities of dry food are currently far too limited to meet population needs amid rising malnutrition rates-particularly among children.
The UN official warned that over 6,000 UNRWA trucks carrying essential foodstuffs, medicine, and supplies have been waiting for over four months to receive permission to enter Gaza. Vital items risk spoilage due to approaching expiration dates.
Lazzarini rejected allegations claiming aid was diverted to Hamas. He stated these accusations have never been raised in any formal meeting nor supported by evidence.
The commissioner added: “The efficient humanitarian aid system has turned into a deadly deception designed to forcibly displace populations and deepen collective punishment policies against Palestinians in Gaza.”
He further stated what is happening is not mere negligence but a systematic policy aimed at humiliating people and denying them their fundamental rights. He called urgently for an immediate ceasefire,a lifting of the blockade, and a release of detainees.
