European Commission President Responds to Trump’s Tariff Threat
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Anadolu Agency, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, responded on Saturday to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threat by stating that Europe remains ready to continue efforts towards an agreement by august 1.
Von der Leyen added that at the same time, the EU will take all necessary steps to safeguard its interests, including imposing proportionate countermeasures if needed.
Emphasizing that Europe has consistently pursued a negotiated solution with the United States and reaffirming its commitment to dialog, stability, and a constructive transatlantic partnership, she stated that only a few global economies meet this bloc’s standards for adherence to fair trade practices.
She warned that imposing 30 percent tariffs on EU exports would disrupt essential transatlantic supply chains and harm businesses, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic.
As returning to office in January 2025, U.S.President Donald Trump has launched an economic tariff war against most countries-including Washington’s partners.On Saturday, he threatened a 30 percent additional tariff on imports from the European Union.
The U.S. president declared: “From early next month we will impose additional tariffs of up to 30 percent on goods from the European Union. We will also apply tariffs up to 30 percent on Mexico starting early next month. If the EU retaliates with tariffs against us,we will raise their tariffs even further.”
