Possible Direct Meeting Between Al-Jolani and Israeli Officials in Baku
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, Israeli news outlet i24NEWS reported, quoting a Syrian official close to Abu Muhammad al-Joulani, that he is expected to attend at least one high-level meeting with Israeli officials in the republic of Azerbaijan on Saturday.
This report coincides with comments by Colonel Jack Nerieh, an Israeli army reservist officer, who spoke to Channel 12 Israel regarding these developments. He stated that talks and contacts are underway between Israel and Syria involving Security Minister Tzachi Hanegbi and Syria’s defense minister. These are managed by al-Joulani.
The reservist colonel added that Israel’s borders have now extended as far as Iraq because Syria has become a buffer zone between Israel and Iran.
He said: “It appears negotiations between Israel and Syria are ongoing. these talks may lead either to a security agreement or continued stability without armed conflict.”
Additionally, Israel’s Kan News network announced that Syria’s change into a buffer zone separating Iran from Israel has altered all regional calculations. It is no surprise that Syrian and Israeli officials would meet in Azerbaijan.
The network further reported that recent weeks have seen both direct and indirect dialogues between Israel and Syria mediated by the United States. The upcoming meeting in Azerbaijan will not be the first of its kind.
