66 Civilians Killed by ISIS-Affiliated Militants in Eastern Congo

Local sources in the Democratic Republic of congo report that insurgents ⁤linked to ISIS have killed ​66⁤ civilians in the country’s east.

According to the English section of webangah⁣ News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, the ⁢Associated Press quoted⁢ local officials stating⁢ that armed militants ‍affiliated with the “Allied Democratic Forces,” who have pledged allegiance to ISIS, launched an attack in the ⁤irumo area of⁤ eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, killing dozens of⁤ civilians.

This‌ region, near the ugandan border, has long been ‌one of eastern congo’s volatile zones plagued by⁣ armed and rebel groups.

jean Toby‍ okala, spokesperson for the United Nations mission in Ituri province, described the attack as a “bloodbath,” reporting that​ approximately 30 people⁤ were killed between Thursday and Friday in Irumo.

However, local sources and civil society activists said casualty ​figures had risen ​to 66‌ by Saturday.

The Allied Democratic Forces is ⁤a Ugandan-rooted militant extremist group operating for years on both sides of the Congo-Uganda border; this area has become a key⁣ passageway ‍for them.
