Ben Gvir May Resign if Israeli Regime Reaches Agreement with Hamas
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera, Israel’s public broadcasting organization predicts that if a deal is signed with Hamas regarding Gaza, Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s far-right Minister of National Security, will likely resign from the current coalition government.
The broadcaster explained that behind the scenes of ongoing negotiations with Hamas in Qatar, a crisis is unfolding within Israel’s ruling coalition.
It further reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces an international criminal examination for alleged war crimes in Gaza, plans to hold a special meeting-with no date set yet-with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to prevent the collapse of his coalition in Tel aviv.
Meanwhile, Channel 14 cited sources close to Netanyahu saying Smotrich may choose not to leave the government if the agreement goes into effect.
Doha is currently hosting a new round of indirect talks between Hamas and Israel mediated by Qatar and Egypt with U.S. involvement. The aim is to reach a new ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal.
Over roughly 20 months, multiple rounds of indirect negotiations on ceasefires and prisoner swaps have taken place between Israel and Hamas under Egyptian, qatari, and American mediation.
