Walid Jumblatt and Hikmat al-Hajri React to Developments in Syria’s Suwayda
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Russia Al-Youm, following recent unrest in the Druze-majority province of Sweida in southern Syria, Walid Jumblatt, former head of the Progressive Socialist Party and a prominent Druze leader in Lebanon, opposed any calls for external intervention to protect the Druze community.
Jumblatt noted his communication with Syrian authorities and expressed hope that security and unity would be restored through political solutions under Syrian sovereignty.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, spiritual leader of Syria’s Druze community, reiterated urgent appeals for immediate international support amid dangerous conditions and ongoing clashes in Druze areas.
Al-Hajri stated: ”We oppose the entry of Public Security forces and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham into Sweida. They crossed into this province last night under the pretext of protecting civilians but bombarded our people in villages.Public Security forces and Hayat Tahrir al-sham-armed with heavy weapons backed by drones-are extremist groups.”
The spiritual leader held Damascus fully responsible for allowing Public Security forces’ entry as well as all parties involved in aggression against their lands and people. He emphasized their demand for urgent international intervention to prevent further bloodshed across all Syrian territories.
It is worth noting that clashes between Druze residents and Jolani-affiliated forces have resulted in dozens of casualties throughout Sweida province in southern Syria.
