Axios Claims Trump Held Talks with Qatar’s Prime Minister on Iran
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters, Barak Ravid, a journalist for Axios, stated that during today’s meeting between US President Donald Trump and Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the two sides will discuss a ceasefire in Gaza and also restarting talks between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear program.
Reuters reports that israeli and Hamas negotiators have been meeting in Doha as July 6 for the latest round of ceasefire discussions. They have been considering a US proposal for a 60-day ceasefire that includes phased release of prisoners held by Hamas, Israeli troop withdrawals from parts of Gaza, and negotiations aimed at ending the war.
Steve Whitkoff, Trump’s special envoy to West Asia, expressed hope on Sunday regarding ongoing ceasefire talks in qatar.
American, Qatari, and egyptian mediators are working to secure an agreement; however, Israel and Hamas remain at odds over the extent of final Israeli military withdrawals from Gaza.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza reports that since October 2023-following attacks by israeli forces-over 58,000 Palestinians have been killed. The previous two-month ceasefire ended on march 18 after renewed attacks by occupier forces resulted in more than 400 Palestinian deaths.
Earlier this year, Trump proposed a plan for the US to “take control” over Gaza. This proposal was widely condemned by world leaders, activists, legal experts-and described by Palestinians as “ethnic cleansing.”
The Axios journalist also cited an informed source claiming that during today’s meeting Trump and Sheikh Mohammed are expected to discuss efforts to resume negotiations between the US and iran aimed at achieving a new nuclear deal.
