Lapid: Netanyahu’s Cabinet Holds No More Power
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, Al Jazeera reported from Channel 12 of Israeli television that Yair Lapid, leader of the Israeli opposition, issued his first response to Shas party’s immediate exit from Netanyahu’s cabinet and its shaky coalition.
Channel 12 reported that Lapid stated: “From today, there is an illegal minority government with no authority.”
The religious authority of the Shas party had previously announced its swift departure from Netanyahu’s cabinet and coalition following the failure to pass a law exempting haredi Jews from mandatory military service.
Shas was one of the main religious parties in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition. Its exit may reduce Cabinet seats from 61 to 50, severely weakening the coalition and causing Netanyahu’s government to lose control over the Knesset. Israel’s religious parties believe that if Netanyahu’s coalition collapses, there will be no war cabinet. Without a war cabinet, hostilities would cease-and where war ends, compulsory military service for Haredi Jews would also be nullified.
