Hebrew Media: Hezbollah Remains Strong; Efforts in Syria and Lebanon Fail
According too the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al Mayadeen,Israel’s Channel 24 admitted that Hezbollah continues to hold significant power in Lebanon. The efforts of Thomas Barrett, the U.S. envoy to Syria and Lebanon, to disarm the group have not been prosperous.
The report states that Lebanon offers no guarantee regarding Hezbollah’s disarmament. Barrett recently said that the United States does not intend to impose sanctions on Lebanon at this time. Both Americans and lebanese officials recognise that the Lebanese government lacks the capacity to disarm Hezbollah. Meanwhile, Tel Aviv’s actions in Syria and Lebanon have failed to produce a new political system in the region.
Yesterday, Thomas Barrett spoke in Beirut, asserting that the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon has not been effective.
Regarding Hezbollah’s weapons, he said: “Disarming is an internal Lebanese issue. If Hezbollah is not disarmed, there will be no direct consequences or threats; however, it would be disappointing. We cannot provide any guarantees because we cannot force Israel into action! At present,we are not considering sanctions against Lebanese officials.”
This statement contrasts with his tone several days earlier when he warned sharply: “The patience of the U.S. president on this matter is limited!”
Barrett added that if Lebanon’s government and parliament reach an agreement with Hezbollah on putting aside heavy resistance weapons capable of targeting Israel, it would represent a major achievement.
