Israeli Regime Elated Over US Withdrawal from UNESCO
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign affairs expressed its satisfaction with the United States’ decision to withdraw from the United nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Institution (UNESCO), according to a report by webangah News Agency, citing Al Jazeera via Mehr News agency.
The ministry described the US exit as a positive step and emphasized the need to set clear limits on targeting Israel within UN-affiliated institutions.
On tuesday, the US State Department notified UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay of its intention to leave the organization.
In its statement, the US department of State claimed that continuing membership in UNESCO no longer serves American national interests. It criticized UNESCO for promoting divisive social and cultural agendas and for focusing excessively on the United Nations’ Enduring Development Goals, which it said conflict with America First foreign policy.
The statement identified one key reason for this move: UNESCO’s decision to accept “Palestine” as a member state. The White House contended this decision contradicted US policy and fueled anti-Israel rhetoric within the organization.
