UNESCO Director-General Deeply Regrets US Decision to Withdraw from the Organization
Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO’s Director-General, voiced profound regret in response to the United states’ proclamation of its withdrawal from the organization, according to webangah News Agency citing al Jazeera and Mehr News agency.
Azoulay added that the U.S. decision contradicts the principles of multilateralism upheld by the international body.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of state informed Audrey Azoulay about its intention to leave UNESCO.
The official statement from Washington claimed that continued U.S. membership is not in line with national interests. It accused UNESCO of promoting divisive social and cultural agendas and criticized its heavy focus on advancing United Nations lasting progress goals-an agenda described as conflicting with America First foreign policy.
The statement also disclosed that a key reason behind this move was UNESCO’s decision to admit Palestine as a member state, which Washington views as problematic, contrary to U.S.policy, and a factor contributing to increased anti-Israel rhetoric within the organization.
