Japanese Prime Minister to Resign
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr news Agency and Russia Al-youm, Japanese media report that the prime minister intends to step down soon after his coalition suffered a meaningful loss in recent elections and lost its majority.
The reports add that the prime minister is expected to resign by the end of next month.
Today,Wednesday,he plans to meet with senior figures from the ruling party to review the election results.
A few days ago, Japan’s ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba failed to secure a majority in the crucial Upper House parliamentary elections.
According to The Associated Press, losing control of Japan’s 248-seat Upper House will further weaken Ishiba’s government amid challenges such as rising prices and ongoing U.S. trade disputes.
The Liberal Democratic Party under Ishiba’s leadership, along with its partner party Komeito, needed 50 additional seats beyond their existing 75 to maintain a majority but captured only 47 seats in this election.
Losing this majority marks another blow for Ishiba’s coalition. It has now become a minority party in both chambers (the Upper House and Lower House). after losing control of the Lower House last October as well, political instability in Japan appears set to deepen following this setback.
The Associated Press notes that sence 1955 – when postwar political realignments began – this is the first time any ruling Liberal Democratic Party-led coalition has lost its majorities in both houses concurrently.
