12 Killed in Cambodian Artillery Attacks on Thailand; Bangkok Deploys F-16s
The English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters, reports that escalating tensions over the contested region known as the “Emerald Triangle” between Thailand and Cambodia, combined with Bangkok’s deployment of F-16 fighter jets and a full-scale conflict in the area, have led to at least 12 fatalities, including 11 civilians.
According to the Thai military, out of six F-16 jets prepared for deployment to the disputed zone, one targeted military positions inside Cambodia. Both countries accused each other early today of initiating hostilities and opening fire.
The Cambodian Ministry of Defense stated that a Thai fighter jet dropped two bombs on a road and strongly condemned “the reckless and brutal military aggression by the Kingdom of Thailand against Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Thailand’s Minister of Health reported that 11 civilians-including one child-and one soldier were killed by Cambodian artillery fire. Additionally, 24 civilians along with seven military personnel sustain injuries. No information has yet been released regarding casualties or injuries on Cambodia’s side.
Thailand and Cambodia are locked in a fierce dispute over a border area called the “Emerald triangle,” where their borders converge alongside Laos. This region contains several ancient temples.
This long-standing conflict has spanned decades, resulting more than 15 years ago-and again in May-in deadly clashes. The latest wave of fighting began early today near two border temples between Surin Province in Thailand and Oddar Meanchey Province in Cambodia.
