Athens Engulfed in Flames + Photos
The English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera, reports that as wildfires spread across Greece’s forests, soaring temperatures and powerful winds have prompted evacuation orders for various regions, including parts of Athens, the capital.
Greek emergency services are currently battling multiple forest fires amid a severe heatwave that has lasted over a week. Temperatures have risen above 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit).
According to Al Jazeera, flames continue to rage this morning in the Peloponnese region west of Athens as well as on the islands of Evia and Kythira. Aircraft and helicopters are conducting firefighting operations across various parts of Greece.
Firefighters say one of the most challenging fronts is near the village of Drosopigi, south of the historic Attica region approximately 30 kilometers from Athens. Authorities have ordered an evacuation there. Domestic media report that at least one home has been destroyed by fire.
The Greek authorities issued high-level wildfire warnings yesterday for several areas with level 5 alerts in effect.
