Germany Expands Influence in Lebanon Under Humanitarian Cover; Role of GIZ Agency
Mehr News Agency, International Desk: With over 40 years of presence in Lebanon, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) implements projects in education, water management, peacebuilding, and employment. These efforts form part of Germany’s soft power strategy to strengthen its economic, political, and cultural influence in the region.
Operating on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic cooperation and Development (BMZ) and backed financially by the European Union, GIZ has long been active in Lebanon. Its projects focus on vocational training, water resource management, peace promotion, and social development. Designed to improve living conditions and enhance stability amid Lebanon’s crises, these initiatives also serve as tools of German soft power. They help garner public support locally while expanding economic partnerships and bolstering Germany’s political standing throughout West Asia. Amid Lebanon’s ongoing economic and social turmoil, GIZ collaborates with local and international institutions to foster sustainable change while projecting Germany as a responsible global actor.
The Strategic Importance of Lebanon to Germany
Lebanon holds special significance for Germany due to its strategic location in West Asia, its cultural diversity, and its role as host to one of the largest refugee populations relative to its size worldwide. The country serves as a geopolitical arena where powers such as China and Iran compete. Economically,Lebanon represents a potential market for German technologies and services.Through GIZ initiatives, Germany aims to ease social tensions within Lebanon; curb irregular migration flows toward Europe; promote Western values such as gender equality; and advance sustainable development goals. These soft power efforts enable Germany to deepen bilateral ties without direct political intervention while cultivating a positive image among Lebanese citizens.
